Written in march 1967, I HAVE NO MOUTH AND I MUST SCREAM is a short story by Harlan Ellison. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world, more specificaly after the cold war, which turns into a more intesnse world war in the story.
Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant. For you. Hate. During the war, the involved counties (US, China, Soviet Union) started to develop their own "Allied Mastercomputers" (also know as AM) to assist them in the war. One of them managed to gain sentience and awareness and took total controll over everything. It uses its power to commit mass genocite and eradicate the species who created it. Only 5 humans are left alive.

THE HUMANS

• Ted - Narrator of the story; believes to have not been at all altered. Shows signs of paranoia and delusion


• Gorrister - Was shown hanging upside dead and bloody, but apears alive later in the story. Was made apathetic by the AM


• Benny - Was once handsome, but physically altered by the AM to resemble a monkey-like form. Has lost all grip on reality and sanity. "He had been gay, and the machine had given him an organ fit for a horse."


• "Nimdok" - Real name unkown, nicknamed Nimdok by the AM. Constantly wanders off and comes back distraught.


• Ellen - The only female of the group. Altered by the AM to constantly want/need sexual intercourse.
